Which Pronk will we see?
I have been incredibly negligent in getting to the blog. So to those hardcore fans of mine, I sincerely apologize. Now – away from the sarcasm and on to the topic at hand…
Baseball is on it’s way back, and I am looking at the Tribe this year as a team with a lot of opportunity to succeed. Kerry Wood is on board, Mark DeRosa’s on board, Carl Pavano is…. we’ll wait and see about Carl Pavano. But overall – I do think that Mark Shapiro has done a fine job of enhancing the talent of this ballclub.
There are a few plot lines I’m eager to watch unfold. The biggest has got to be Travis Hafner. After an injury filled, frustrating and brutal campaign in 2008 that led to offseason shoulder surgery, both Eric Wedge and Shapiro have been running all over town screaming about how they anticipate a championship middle of the order bat, the return of Pronk. OK, maybe not screaming – but not really using their inside voices. The return of the Travis Hafner of 2006 would be a more than welcome surprise – and would considerably boost an already strong offence. It will be interesting to see if he bounces back and really makes a difference in the heart of the order.
I gotta say that I’m rooting for the big guy. Our offence, especially in the last couple of years, has seen a sharing of the spotlight, where different guys will come up with the big hit in different situations. And don’t get me wrong – I have zero issue with that. However – I LOVE having a monster in the lineup, someone who can change things with one swing at any time. A guy who makes opposing pitchers panic and opposing managers sweat and opposing fans spew venom out of fear. I want Batman in that batter’s box. Albert Belle was … unpleasant?… but undoubtedly posessed that quality. Jim Thome. Manny Ramirez. In 2006 Hafner was that guy, and I know I’m not the only one who would do a ridiculous dance (and hope afterwards that no one saw it) if we were to see a return of that imposing figure in the Cleveland Indian lineup.
There have been rumblings that maybe he got mixed up in performance enhancing substances, and to be honest I found myself at times wondering the same thing through the struggles of his last two seasons. However, I analyzed the situation with some depth and here are my thoughts:
He’s always been a big, physically imposing guy. When he started out in College and in the Minors with the Rangers system, he was a RAW talent
who could tear the hide off the ball when he got on it, but struck out
a TON. At 24-25 he began putting up big numbers, but more telling in
these statistics was the fact that his strikeout totals decreased
dramatically and his walk totals increased – showing that he learned
the strike zone, he learned to recognize pitches and patterns – he
learned to HIT.
Go back and look at his track record – this isn’t a guy who’s been
consistently healthy. In fact, in 2007 (subpar by Pronk standards) he
collected more at bats than in any of his previous MLB seasons.
I think he’s had a couple tough years due to nagging injuries that
have led to second guessing his approach and constant adjustments. I
know I play my worst golf when I start thinking too much. Plus – this
guy’s under a TON of pressure. Let’s hope that he can come to spring training loose and healthy and ready to build some momentum to take into the season.
I know that Pronkville has suffered and struggled through the last couple of years, but I am a proud citizen awaiting the triumphant return of our proud and noble mayor!
Soon we’ll see if I’m simply suffering from the optimism of pre-season excitement, or if he truly can overcome the adversity of these past two seasons and return to form. And if that should materialize, our Dark Knight returns…
Cliff Lee – the comeback kid!!
Congratulations are definitely in order for Cliff Lee.
I have to admit that coming into this season I was skeptical about the impact he would have at all, let alone what ended up transpiring. Then again, who could have guessed? In 2007 he came out of spring training injured, was demoted to Buffalo in July, and was completely left off of the post season roster. It’s safe to say that I wasn’t alone in feeling less than confident about his potential to spring back in ’08.
Needless to say that I and many others were proven very, VERY wrong.
Through April and his absolutely ridiculous start to this season, there was a surreal feeling that surrounded each of his performances. Here was Cliff Lee, utterly dominant, untouchable, fierce, coming straight at the opposition. This wasn’t the man we saw in 2007, messing around the edges of the strike zone, throwing all kinds of off-speed pitches and generally picking at the count – this man was on the attack, on a mission. And it was working. I wondered if it was just out of shock that teams weren’t getting to him, that they had to throw their scouting reports out the window (which no doubt they did) and start from scratch. There was a sense after April that it couldn’t last, but he continued through May, June, July. And from July 28th on he didn’t lose until his final start of the season.
It seems impossible as yet to really digest what he accomplished this season, as it truly was remarkable. In fact, remarkable seems like an understated word for the occasion. To consider where he was just one short season ago, or even the moderate success he’d achieved prior to his disastrous ’07, only adds to the complexity and drama of his marvelous and enigmatic achievement. And for us Tribe fans, it gave us something positive to take from a season that was in many ways a firmly disappointing and disheartening experience.
Congratulations Cliff! Now dust off a spot on that shelf for Cy…
Random thoughts 09-29-08
- The carton of milk expired today
- I wonder if this lethargy has anything to do with the fact that the Tribe are done??
These aren’t really the type of random thoughts I wanted to address, but I thought I’d get them out of the way so I could get to the “useful” thoughts….
First off – Alexei Ramirez needs to eat a sandwich. However, that does not negate his grand slam that forced the one game playoff between the Twins and Sox tomorrow night in Chicago. I really don’t care for either of these teams (for obvious reasons) – but because Ozzie just bugs me (choke anyone?),I’d like to see the Twins take this match.
The reality is I don’t really see either of these teams going too far. The Twins are a scrappy bunch, but I don’t know that they have the depth to challenge a team like the Red Sox or the Angels. Watching the White Sox play of late – I think they’re alright ’til you get to the bullpen – then anything can happen. Watching the Tribe this year, we know that scenario all too well… However, we’re looking at October, where all you have to do is get in the door. You get the hot hand and you could take it all the way home…
Speaking of the Tribe, I can’t help but wonder what the future will have in store for Travis Hafner. I watch this guy play and I really want him to succeed, I find myself yearning for that sense I used to have when he stepped up that he could change the game and swing the momentum at any time. That just isn’t the way it is any more. I get mad at him and yell and curse at the TV. Who knows what it is? Is it physical? Is it mental? Is it mechanical? Travis – if you’re reading this the entire city of Cleveland and Tribe fans everywhere want you back!! No matter what we might say out of frustration we all have our fingers crossed that you’ll come back in ’09 able to produce like the good ‘ol days. We’d all like to see you as a threat again…
Who knows what ’09 will bring? All I know is that I’m already looking forward to it, and the regular season just ended yesterday…. I’ll watch CC dominate for the Brewers, Casey manning the hot corner in Dodger blue and Byrdie slingin for the Red Sox and my brain will throw up in it’s mouth a little bit… if that’s possible.
‘Til the next set of random thoughts percolate – GO TWINS! (that felt dirty….)
